Spring Rain Crocheted Afghan

untitled-9437

This afghan was made with Caron Simply Soft.  The colors are Pistachio and Dark Sage.  I’m providing my instructions for anybody else who wants to make this blanket.

The center is a pretty stand-alone blanket.  I’ve given hints for making a baby blanket or a king sized.  The body of the blanket is 40″ wide and 48″ long so I used 8″ squares for the border.  There are 5 squares on the top and bottom and 6 squares along the sides, with an additional 4 more for the corners.  That’s a total of 26 squares. I didn’t keep track of how many skeins I used but it is a yarn hog.  I’m pretty close to the amount needed.

If you try this pattern and run into any trouble leave a comment on the blog and I’ll get back to you.  Thanks!  Melissa

Spring Rain Afghan

Afghan Body

Intermediate

Approximate Finished size of Afghan with Square Borders: 62×72

Materials

Hook Size: H or size needed to obtain gauge

5 Skeins each Pistachio and Dark Sage Caron Simply Soft

Gauge: (3 dc plus 1 ch) 3 times = 3.5 inches (3-1/2″).

Pattern Notes:

Ch 1 at beginning of row counts as first single crochet.  Ch 3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet;

Changing Colors:  When changing colors I like to use a slip stitch with the new yarn and carry both the ending color and the new color through the first st.  I then drop the ending color and cinch up the stitches.  This does put a small knot in the yarn, but it hides easily when weaving the ends in and it ensures the afghan won’t come apart with wear and washings.  There are great instructions on changing colors, weaving in ends, sewing squares together and just about anything else on The Crochet Crowd website.

This pattern can be increased or decreased as desired.  The repeat is 5 st, plus 1.    So in order to make a baby blanket, you could ch 76, (which is 5×15+1),  then begin Row 1.  If you want to make for a king size bed afghan without the border I added, you could chain 291 (which is 5×58+1) then begin Row 1.

Spike Stitch Directions:

***Spike double crochet (sdc): yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo, pull up lp to height of current row (3 lps on hook), (yo, pull through 2 lps) twice.
